Kidneys have many important functions in dogs as in humans. It is used for filtering the body from waste through the urine, maintaining the body of fluids, and many more. That’s why kidney is of big importance and should be treated immediately when there’s a problem. If you think kidney disease is only for human, you’re wrong because even dogs sometimes have it.

There are two types of kidney disease, “acute” and “chronic”. Acute kidney disease can be reversible if detected early, but chronic can only be treated but not reversible. There are signs you can look out for when your dog is old, which is also the cause of the disease. Excessive urinating is one. Although the dog keeps on drinking, the fluid is always being urinated. Loss of appetite, depression, vomiting, and weight loss are the more advanced signs.

There are some things you can do for your dog:

1. Fluid therapy. This will retain the fluid lost by constant urination. Good nutrition like protein, phosphorus, and salt are necessary. Iron and b-vitamins are also vital to counter anemia.

2. Calcitriol is vitamin D to stop the worsening of the kidney. Although it is new, the results are promising.

Still, the best thing to do is take your dog to the vet. Doctors always know the best when it comes to health problems.
